Carburizing and Carbonitriding are surface thermochemical processes that enrich the surface structure of the steels with carbon and/or nitrogen, providing a hardened and resistant layer on the surface and a tough core in the treated parts. These processes aim to improve shock resistance, resilience and wear resistance without modifying the original core of the part.
Processes Details
The process begins by generating an atmosphere inside the furnace rich in carbon or nitrogen depending on the case. The parts are then subjected to high temperatures (approximately 900ºC) for several hours allowing the carbon and/or nitrogen to penetrate the surface. The entire process is carried out in a controlled atmosphere with automatic regulation of the carbon potential. Subsequently, the parts are transferred to the cooling chamber of the furnace itself where the oil quenching is carried out. Once the carburizing and quenching process is finished, the parts are transferred to another furnace to finish the tempering process to obtain the qualities corresponding to each zone of the material with different percentage of carbon.
It is possible to mask the parts to avoid carburizing the areas that are not of interest. Sometimes carburized parts are subsequently quenched in vacuum furnaces.
All control parameters are monitored and recorded in real time to ensure the quality of the treatment. It is possible to obtain layer thicknesses ranging from 0.1 to 3 mm, which provides a hardened and resistant surface layer.
TTT Group has the necessary aeronautical certifications to carry out Carburizing and Carbonitriding treatment, thus ensuring compliance with the quality and safety requirements and standards in the industry.
Parts and Components
Carburizing and Carbonitriding are commonly applied to parts that require high shock resistance, toughness, and wear resistance. These include gears, pinions, cams, axles, bushings, bearings, spindles and connecting rods, as well as other components used in automotive, aeronautics, lifting, transportation and capital goods sectors.
Fields of Application
The main fields of application of these treatments are the automotive, aeronautical, lifting, transport and capital goods industries. These sectors demand highly resistant and durable components to guarantee the safe and efficient operation of their products. For the automotive sector we hold the IATF Certification.
